When Withholding Backfires: Predictable Side Effects of Extinction and the Better Path Forward

“Just ignore the undesirable behavior.”

Have you ever tried applying this “golden rule” in training — only to see your dog’s behavior worsen, or feel a painful emotional weight yourself?

This is not a sign of weakness. It is a predictable “side effect” demonstrated in extinction research data.

In this webinar, we will unpack research data from behavior analysis to objectively examine what happens to behavior when the reinforcement is removed — including extinction bursts, aggression, and other side effects.

This is a first step toward consciously choosing more ethical and compassionate alternatives beyond simply “ignoring.” We will translate complex science into everyday language, and together explore a new approach where neither animals nor people are harmed.

Let’s take this step forward together.
