Reactive, Fearful, and Aggressive Behavior:
A Fresh Perspective and New Ways to
Understand and Help Our Animal Companions

Are you struggling with your dog’s reactivity, aggression, or fear?

When there are some triggers, maybe your dog barks or growls.
When someone approaches them, maybe they lunge, snap, or behave aggressively. Or maybe your dog freezes, shakes, or tries to hide when someone comes close.

Do you ever feel lost, not knowing what to do in those moments?

Because of these behaviors, do you struggle with daily challenges in your life:

  • Your dog is so afraid that you can’t invite friends or guests into your home

  • During walks, your dog suddenly becomes aggressive

  • You or any family members cannot relax and move freely in the house

  • You constantly have to manage your dog’s behavior

  • You wonder whether past or current training programs are actually improving the dog’s behaviors

This kind of life is stressful for both you and your dog.
If left unaddressed, these problems can get worse — sometimes leading to injuries, hospitalization, surrendering to a shelter, or even euthanasia.

But the good news is:
With the right way of understanding these behaviors and how we approach them, we can solve these problems at their root.

To everyone living with dogs who are reactive, fearful, or aggressive —
To the trainers working so hard to help them —

There is another way forward.
There are real solutions.

Let’s shift how we think!

What if your dog’s “reactivity,” “aggressive behavior,” or “fearful behavior” are not problems to stop, but messages to understand?

Dogs communicate through their behavior.
What if we start listening to what they’re trying to say?

This is where the science of behavior — Behavior Analysis — comes in.
With behavior analysis, we can understand not just what a behavior looks like, but why it’s happening—its function.

By using scientific methods, we can ask the dog:
“When you behave like this, what are you trying to get or escape/avoid?”

Once we understand what the dog wants (the function of the behavior), we can use that to teach new, desirable behaviors. This is called function-based training.

For example, if a dog becomes reactive, fearful, or aggressive to get:

  • More distance from people: we can use “distance” to build the dog more appropriate behaviors

  • Interaction with people: we can use “human interaction” to build desirable behaviors

  • Interaction with other dogs: we can use “dog interaction” to build better responses

  • And of course, there are many more other things dogs want that we can use to build desirable behaviors!

When we understand what the dog wants through these behaviors and use that to teach better behaviors, we can solve problems at their root.

  • The dog learns behaviors that actually get them what they need

  • They no longer need to do these behaviors that are risky and costly for them to do

  • The dog gets what they want, and humans get the behavior they want — a true win-win situation!

To assess behavioral functions and apply function-based training correctly, you first need solid knowledge of the concepts and procedures. That’s exactly what you will learn from this CAAWT Online Class.

CAAWT founders Dr. Sean Will and Maasa Nishimuta have used behavior analysis for years to uncover the “why” behind various problem behaviors and solve them through function-based training.

In this 10-session class, we will share the theory, the step-by-step process, and real cases showing how behavior analysis works in practice.

By the end of the course, the way you see behavior will completely change.

Online Class Description

You’ll gain knowledge you can’t get anywhere else, directly from experts in behavior analysis:

  • A new way to understand reactivity, fear, and aggression

  • A modern view of emotions, such as “fear,” “anger,” and emotional behaviors

  • How to distinguish between the form/topography of behavior and the function of behavior

  • How to ask an animal question, “What do you want from this behavior?” (CAAWT Assessment Method)

  • What function-based training is and how it works

    • Constructional Affection: using affection, in the form of petting, to build desirable behaviors

    • Interaction Loop: using interaction with other dogs to build desirable behaviors

    • CAT (Constructional Aggression Treatment): using distance to build desirable behaviors

  • Case studies showing real training examples

  • How trainers use data and graphs to focus on building desirable behaviors instead of suppressing or eliminating problem behaviors

  • The ethics needed for the future animal training: What does compassionate, animal-centered training look like?

Knowledge-based online class

Unlike our past project-based classes, this class focuses on acquiring new knowledge.

Working with reactivity, fearful, or aggressive behaviors requires more time and support through the assessment process, implementation of procedures, and structuring of safety protocols. Due to this, support for actual training will only be accessible through CAAWT Membership.

In this course, you’ll learn the theory and see real examples so you can build the knowledge needed to design thoughtful, safe, function-based training plans.

Each 2-hour online class includes lectures, quizzes, activities, and discussion. You can also join the Open House session to ask questions. By the end, you’ll see behavior with completely new eyes.

If you want to apply what you learn in real life, you can join the CAAWT Membership for continued support, feedback, and guidance from Dr. Sean and Maasa.

Benefits of taking this class

  • Learn unique knowledge directly from the experts in behavior analysis

  • Understand how to approach problem behaviors using behavior analysis

  • Learn how to identify the function of behavior so you can avoid misinterpreting your dog

  • Discover training methods beyond using food rewards

  • Learn what compassionate, ethical training looks like

  • Join the Open House session for unlimited discussion and Q&A

  • Learn in a warm, supportive, friendly atmosphere

Maasa Nishimuta, M.S., BCBA

Registration

Learn behavior analysis directly from specialists you won’t find anywhere else—
Dr. Sean Will, who holds a Ph.D. in behavior analysis, and Maasa Nishimuta, is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

With behavior science, you can understand what dogs are trying to get through their behavior—and suddenly their actions become much clearer. By understanding and meeting the animal’s needs, you can solve behavior issues at the root.

Even if you’re starting with zero knowledge, your “eyes for behavior” will change through CAAWT’s unique 10-session course. Let’s begin here!
